Solar Electricity

Our electricity comes directly from the sun.

No middleman! No oil companies, no power lines, and no greenhouse gases. Photovoltaic panels capture the sun's energy and convert it to electricity, which charges our batteries.

Solar hot water

On the roof of the barn we have solar thermal panels for heating water on sunny days.

Furnace

Rain Water

Roofs of each building here are part of a system to collect and store rain water for domestic and agricultural use.

Wind

Like the bigger wind farms around us, we also harvest energy from the steady winds so common in Tehachapi.
Our wind turbine produces electricity when the blades turn, another constantly renewable resource.

Water supply

Our water is pumped slowly and efficiently from a well.
After its use, the 'grey water' flows underground directly to tree roots for irrigation.
So we use only environmentally benign, 'biocompatible' soap for washing and bathing.

Our Water Tanks

Compost

We try to reduce waste by reusing and recycling materials.
Our food waste goes to the compost pile to nourish the soil.
We separate garbage into burnable, plastic, recyclable bottles, cans, and glasses, cutting the amount which end up in the landfill.
